Oh man… the show was AWESOME.

The crowd was big, and they were very involved in the show.  We all played well and sounded great.  Before hand, we got to set up all our gear and soundcheck each instrument separately.  So at show time, all we had to do was walk up on stage, pick up our instrument, and play.  It couldn’t have gone more smoothly.

As I was getting up on stage, I heard a few people call out things like “alright, let’s see it!”  You see, Smiths fans (and guitarists specifically) are a special breed.  They’ve all idolized and studied the Smiths as I have, and they all have a collective belief that some of that stuff simply could never be recreated by mere mortals.  I was/am among that group, and I know that, were I in the crowd that night, I might have shouted something similar.  “They think they can pull off the Smiths?  Bullshit.”  And so it seemed the musicians in the crowd were indeed ready to crucify us if we fucked up…

But we didn’t.  Bitches.

Afterwards, among the people coming up to shake our hands and congratulate us on a great show were a few guitarists that each said they were more than skeptical but were “blown away” by the accuracy of the performance.  Girls were digging it.  Guys were digging it.  Lots of love in that room.  For all our snobbery, fans of the Smiths are still just a big family.  I’ve been in a haze of contentment ever since.  If you were able to make it, thank you so much and I hope you enjoyed yourself.  If you couldn’t make it, well I won’t lie, you missed a hell of a show.  But there will be others…

Orlando taped the whole thing, but I haven’t seen it yet.  Someone did manage to get the last half of “I Know It’s Over” on their digital camera, and here it is.  I haven’t tried to compress it or anything, so it’s still around 200mb.  If you have the time to download it, take a look.  You may want to “Save Target As…” because I guarantee you can’t download it as fast as it plays.  Hope you’re all doing well!  Update: I compressed it down to a 14mb ASF file.  Should be easier on you now.  🙂

This has been a pretty tame week.  But all that is about to change.  Popscene.  Tomorrow night.  Bitches.

Thesaurus.com, bitches.

Well kiddies, a lot has happened this week.  First and foremost, you may have noticed that I never talk about relationships on here.  And that’s not about to change.  But the news is that I am single now.  It is rough, we’re still friends, enough said.

In happier news, my first gig with This Charming Band was on Wednesday.  I was shitting acid all week leading up to it, but as soon as I walked in, my nerves were calmed.  This is because my worst fears came true.  Allow me to explain: I had been worried that we were going to be a part of this comedy variety hour and thus treated as a joke.  As soon as I got there, I saw that this was indeed the case, but it took all the pressure off me as a musician.  My fucking up this or that part of a song was the least of our worries.  As soon as I started playing, I relaxed and had a hell of a time.  Drunken women danced and sang along.  People looked at me differently, and believe me, I could tell the difference.  I can see why people want so badly to do this for a living.  Such a tremendous sense of power up there, and that was just at a dive bar.  Can you imagine at Popscene?

By the way, thank you especially to Taylor and Jonee for coming!  And thanks to the rest of you who were there in spirit!

In preparation for the gigs, and generally just to reward myself for being such a stand-up guy, I’ve gotten some serious new equipment.  Among the recent acquisitions is a Fender ’59 Bassman re-issue, a Fender ’63 Reverb tank re-issue, and a series of new effects pedals.  Why?  Because I have no self control.  At least I’m not buying more guitars.  Yet.

Life was turned upside-down this week.  The future is unclear, but it’s sure to be exciting.  A new chapter of life lay open, waiting to be written.  A new era of Benjamin.  Playing guitar all the time.  Tattoos.  New friends.  Lots more therapy.  The latest incarnation of the man I’ve always imagined myself to be.  And who knows what comes next?

There are some things I will never understand.  Justify it however you want – it still looks like deception and feels like rejection.  If you have something to say to me, then say it.

Of course, then look at me.  Rather than say what I had to say, I wrote it here.

Touché.

I got my car back from the shop.  I am happier than a pig in shit.

The whole front end was replaced, and Town Car is back in perfect working order.  He’s cleaner than he’s ever been.  Long and shiny.  After riding around in a compact rental car for two weeks, I am appreciating having Town Car more than I ever thought possible.  The ride is so fucking smooth.  Just big, plush, and buttery-smooth around every turn and at every acceleration.  Coming home tonight was like flying home on a shiny black cloud.  If this all sounds sexual to you, that’s because it is.  I was all hot and bothered when I got home.  Fucking love my car.  Welcome home, Baby.

In other news, the band finally has a MySpace profile, but our singer created it, so it’s out of my hands.  I can’t add you, but you can go add us.  So, go do it.  Do it.  Do it.  That was my Ben Stiller impression.  I guess it doesn’t really come through in print.

Popscene is gonna rock.  I can’t even wait.  We’ve also added a preliminary show at El Rio on Mission and Valencia.  That’ll be Wednesday, November 16th.  So in case you won’t be in town for Popscene, you can see our technical “debut” at El Rio.  Check out the afore-mentioned MySpace profile for details.

Town Car is parked down stairs.  My neighbors are fucking upstairs.  It’s Friday night, and I’m home alone playing guitar.  And I wouldn’t want it any other way.  All is right with the world.

I would just like to point out that our Thanksgiving show was on Morrissey-Solo’s front page today.  If you’re not a Moz fan, that will mean nothing to you.  Is this big?  It’s huge.

Not to piss on the parade of what is otherwise a wonderful occasion, but you’ll notice the very first comment someone posted on the story points out what I’ve been trying to convice the guys of all along.  I love them, but why oh why didn’t they listen?  Smartest man ever, remember?

Finally, if you’re reading this and I’ve just spammed your profile with a flyer, I apologize.  Hope you didn’t mind.  🙂

I have nothing major to say, but I wanted to show off the draft of the flyer for our Thanksgiving show.  I’ve been practicing like crazy.  Practicing two things, really.  Playing the songs and not shitting myself out of nervousness.

Now, if you haven’t already heard of the band She Wants Revenge, then you should check them out.  Do this now.
